Mutations Festival

Mutations Festival

Mutations approached Loot to develop a visual identity that could grow with the scale and unpredictability of the festival - resulting in a flexible branding and campaign system used across two editions of the experimental multi-venue event in Brighton.

mutations festival

Mutations is an experimental multi-venue music festival in Brighton, UK, showcasing new and leftfield artists across genres.

Rooted in underground culture and a focus on forward-thinking programming, the festival champions live music that feels urgent, unpredictable, and alive.

the client

After several earlier editions, the team behind Mutations returned in 2021 with their most ambitious plan yet: four days, over 100 acts, and a broader sonic palette - from post-punk to electronic, ambient to noise.

They needed a visual identity that could grow with the scale of the event while staying true to its DIY roots.

The concept centred around the idea of mutation - distortion, transformation, growth and unpredictability.

The design system needed to feel visceral and slightly uncomfortable, drawing inspiration from warped organisms, microscopic textures and digital decay. It also had to remain flexible enough to work across digital promotion, print materials, motion graphics, merchandise and on-site installations.

The brief

the approach

The visual language was built around organic distortion and digital mutation - glitch textures, fluid layering, warped typography and saturated tones.

3D rendered forms became the core visual motif, creating imagery that felt unstable and constantly shifting - as though the visuals were evolving in real time.

Each piece of communication felt like part of the same ecosystem, but slightly altered - mirroring the spirit of the festival itself.

For the 2022 edition, the system evolved further: new animation styles, bolder stage visuals and a more editorial layout approach that supported the expanded and more diverse lineup.
